In Michigan’s Alger County you’ll find Twelvemile Beach located along the 40 mile Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. 16 miles west of Grand Marais, Twelvemile beach well named for its long sandy/pebbly landscape along Lake Superior. Another beach located in Michigan’s Alger County and along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Chapel Beach is approximately 15 miles east of Munising. A bit more challenging to get to, this beach requires you to take a 3 mile hike from the trailhead to the actual beach. However, you’ll experience breathtaking views of Chapel Lake as well as Chapel Falls. The sandy beach itself features a sandstone remnant, known as Chapel Rock. You’re sure to experience an abundance of beauty and adventure while visiting this Lake Superior treasured beach.

The final beach located along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan’s Alger County, Sand Point Beach is the closest to Munising at just a short 4 mile distance from town. The fourth beach located in Marquette in Michigan’s Marquette County, Clark Lambros Beach Park is on the shoreline of Lake Superior in Presque Isle Harbor. A place for everyone to enjoy, this beach has wheelchair accessibility and a beach-accessible wheelchair for those with limited mobility to be able to take advantage of the unique beauty Lake Superior has to offer. Note that the beach wheelchair is only available during peak season when a lifeguard is on duty. Located in Mohawk within Michigan’s Keweenaw County, Great Sand Beach is a sandy/rocky beach on the shore of Lake Superior. Black River Harbor Recreation Area

Bessemer, Michigan 

In Michigan’s Gogebic County, 16 miles from Bessemer you’ll find Black River Harbor Recreation Area along the Lake Superior shore. This is a sandy/pebbly beach with lots to offer from ample parking space that is suitable for RVers to the pavilion for restrooms and a communal fireplace, ideal for gatherings. Black River Harbor Recreation Area is also known to be a waterfall hotspot, from the Recreation Area you’ll have access to Rainbow Falls, Sandstone Falls, George Falls, Potawatomi Falls and Great Conglomerate Falls. Other amenities include an open boat launch and a picnic area with tables.

Little Girls Point County Park Beach

Ironwood, Michigan

In the Gogebic County of Michigan in the community of Ironwood, Little Girls Point County Park Beach is a unique cobblestone beach along the Lake Superior shoreline. Also known as Broad Street Beach, Halvor Reiten Park and Public Beach is located in Bayfield in Wisconsin’s Bayfield County. The park is a historic boatyard and got the name from the original owner Halvor Reiten who built and repaired wooden boats, this is the pinnacle of Bayfield’s Maritime History. In Cornucopia in Wisconsin’s Bayfield County you’ll find Meyers Beach. This Lake Superior sandy beach is in Mawikwe Bay on the Apostle Island National Lakeshore. From this beach you can find the Apostle Island Sea Caves by either hiking the Meyers Beach Sea Cave Trail or hiking to them.

Located 4 miles from Herbster you’ll find Bark Bay in Wisconsin’s Bayfield County. A secluded, sandy Lake Superior beach that stretches 2 miles along the bay. This beach is accessible only by boat through Bark Bay State Slough Natural Area. Bark Bay Slough consists of a coastal barrier spit, lagoon, springs, and wetlands between two rocky headlands along Lake Superior.

The sand dune beach of Franklin Square/12th Street Beach is located in Duluth Minnesota’s St. Louis County, also just past the Aerial Lift Bridge. Duluth, Minnesota 

42nd Ave E. Park Beach is a cobblestone, rocky beach located on Lake Superior in Duluth Minnesota’s St. Louis County. Not the easiest to access, this beach requires you to walk a footpath, climb some rocky areas – caution as they’re sometimes slippery, once at the end it opens up to a secluded Lake Superior hideaway. A perfect location to rock hunt, skip stones and bask in the sun on the large dark rocks that absorb the heat. This is a pet friendly area and is located only less than a mile from Glensheen Historic Mansion.

Located in Two Harbors in Minnesota’s Lake County is Agate Bay Beach. As the name suggests, this beach is perfect for agate hunting with its mixture of pebbles, sand and rocks. Also located in Two Harbors in Minnesota’s Lake County is Burlington Bay Beach. This Lake Superior beach is a pebbly/sandy location within Burlington Bay. Easily accessible off the side of the road you’ll find a small gravel parking area to the right side of it. This beach is a hotspot for natural artifacts of Lake Superior, find collection worthy stones, “sea” glass/ lake glass and agates. For nearby camping there is Burlington Bay Campground nearby. There is a parking area on the far side of the Stewart River Bridge. Take small foot paths down to the beach, once there it opens up to Lake Superior displaying seemingly endless views.

Located in Gooseberry Falls State Park in Minnesota’s Lake County is Agate Beach. A short 13 miles north of Two Harbors, this pebbly beach is situated near the Gooseberry Falls. Two Harbors, Minnesota

Just up from Agate Beach, Thompson Beach is 15 miles from Two Harbors in Minnesota’s Lake County. This pebbly beach is admired for it’s seclusion. It can only be accessed via kayak from Gooseberry Falls State Park, 2.4 miles south of the beach. Or, by hiking off the Gitchi Gami State Trail. There is the option of camping at this location with designated areas.

Iona’s Beach

Two Harbors, Minnesota

Also located in Two Harbors in Minnesota’s Lake County 16 miles north of Two Harbors is Iona’s Beach Scientific and Natural Area (SNA). This beach features a paved parking lot and boat launch. The uniqueness of the beach is derived from the pink, smooth stones that make up the landscape. You’ll hear a windchime like melody from the stones as the waves of Lake Superior rustle them on the shore. This location does require a small trek (200 meters) from the parking lot to the beach but is not considered difficult as it is a well used path.

Located in Split Rock Lighthouse State Park in Minnesota’s Lake County is Pebble Beach. A stony/pebbly beach featuring a landscape of smooth thin stones, perfect for skipping on Lake Superior. From the beach you can view Split Rock Lighthouse, a historic monument. Amenities include ample parking, dog friendly areas and RV parking.

Black Beach

Silver Bay, Minnesota 

Only a mile from Silver Bay city limits lays Black Beach in Minnesota’s Cook County. As per the name, this Lake Superior Beach encompasses beautiful silk black sand, offering a unique setting. The black sand is derived from  the discarding of taconite tailings into Lake Superior. Over time the beach has been restored to health but the onyx hue still remains there. This lake does require a bit of a walk to get to from the small gravel parking lot but isn’t considered difficult.

Also located in Minnesota’s Cook County, Sugarloaf Cove Beach is located in Schroeder within the Sugarloaf Cove Nature Preserve. Located in the State Park near Schroeder, Temperance River State Park Beach is in Minnesota’s Cook County. Two-Fish House Beach

Grand Portage, Minnesota

Just 5.6 miles outside of Grand Portage in Minnesota’s Cook County, you’ll find Two-Fish House Beach, a pebbly/rocky beach. This Lake Superior gem is just off highway 61. There is a small parking area and so parking roadside is also an option. This place offers a unique nostalgia through the old abandoned fish houses located on the left side of the beach as well as an old abandoned car within the forest.

Hollow Rock Beach

Grand Portage, Minnesota

Just south of Grand Portage (3 miles) is Hollow Rock Beach, located in Minnesota’s Cook County at the Hollow Rock Resort. This pebbly beach on the shore of Lake Superior is just down county road 89. Named appropriately, this beach features a picturesque rock formation in the water just off the shore of the beach.  Seeing how the beach is located at a resort there is parking space, restrooms and is open to visitors to the beach, even if you’re not a guest at the resort.

Porphyry Island Black Sand Beach

Thunder Bay, Ontario

Located at the southwest end of the Black Bay Peninsula, just east of Sleeping Giant Provincial Park is Porphyry Island, where Black Sand Beach sits on the shore of Lake Superior. Travel by kayak, canoe, or power boat to get to the island, you can even hire to travel by floatplane or helicopter as there is a heliport at Porphyry. The island itself is made up of black volcanic rock and is topped with boreal forest, offering protection from Lake Superior elements. The Black Sand Beach is a result of the islands volcanic rock eroding and breaking down, over time creating a fine sandy beach, perfect for warming up after a swim in Lake Superior.

In Ontario’s Superior Country, Terrace Bay beach is located at the Lake Superior National Marine Conservational Area in Terrace Bay. This is a sandy beach located on Lake Superior. From here, you can view the caribou populated Slate Islands Provincial Park as well as the lower falls of Aguasabon. This beach offers fun for the whole family, volleyball, a boat launch and docks. Ample parking, public restrooms and wheelchair accessible kayak launches. By the summer of 2022 the beach will feature a 300 meter long boardwalk to stroll down and enjoy Lake Superior views. Other amenities include being pet friendly, access to nature trails and a chance to go to the Parks Canada Red Chairs.

Terrace Bay, Ontario

Just shy of 55 miles east of Terrace Bay in Ontario’s Superior Country. This 1.2 mile long sandy beach on the Shore of Lake Superior’s Ashburton Bay is within Neys Provincial Park and offers shallow swimming areas. Little Pic River flows into Lake Superior at one end of the beach while at the other end is a volcanic rock dating back before time. Amenities include being a pet friendly location, having parking suitable for RV’s and the parking area in itself is in close proximity to the beach.

Located in Marathon in Ontario’s Superior Country is Pebble Beach. This beach stretching 1.2 miles long and as the name suggests is landscaped in pebbles. The colorful rounded stones that make up this beach offers picturesque views of Lake Superior. The parking lot is situated just above the beach and offers spectacular views as well. From the parking area is a path that leads down to the beach, it is recommended to walk with caution down the path to the beach. Also located in Ontario’s Algoma Country in the community of Wawa, this is a rocky/pebbly beach on the shore of Lake Superior and stretches mere 500 feet long. Not being an ideal located for swimming due to the harsh drop-off and strong undertow, you can still enjoy the beautiful views of Lake Superior. This is a common destination for photographers and storm watchers to capture the harsh elements Lake Superior can produce.

Old Woman Bay

Lake Superior Provincial Park, Ontario

Old Woman Bay is located within the Lake Superior Provincial Park just south of Wawa (16 miles). A sandy beach stretching 1.8 miles long, this beach offers wonderous views of Lake Superior. Parking is located across highway 17 at the Nokomis Trailhead and is suitable for RV parking as well. Other amenities include washrooms, benches and picnic tables – a perfect pit stop destination!

In Lake Superiors Provincial Park in Ontario’s Algoma Country is Katherine Cove. This sandy beach on the Lake Superior shore offers picnic tables, benches and washrooms all available for public use. This is an ideal location for swimming and is adjacent to the Lizard Islands, another ideal swimming area. From the beach, there is a short yet difficult hiking trail to Bathtub Island, along the Coastal Trail.

Situated 26.7 miles north of Sault Ste. Marais, Harmony Beach is in Ontario’s Algoma Country. Stretching 2 miles long, this sandy beach is accessible via Harmony Beach Road off highway 17. There is a boat launch and plenty of parking at this location. You can also choose to stay overnight at the resort or campground!

Located in Sault Ste. Marie is Point Des Chenes in Ontario’s Algoma Country. Apart of the Lions Club Point Des Chenes Campground, this is a sandy Lake Superior beach. Although the beach itself is sandy the underwater landscape is is rather rocky, water shoes are a good thing to keep in mind. Amenities include washrooms and changerooms and pet friendly areas. From this location you can view freighters come and go from the Soo Docks and marvelous views of Lake Superior.
