Mendota (Bete Grise) Lighthouse is located Bete Grise in Michigan’s Keweenaw County. The grounds and tower of this lighthouse are closed to the public however you can view it from across the Mendota Canal. Drive to where Bete De Gris Road ends and take the short walk to the shore of the canal. The lighthouse was built in 1895 and stands 42.6 feet (13m) tall. Originally, a lighthouse was constructed here in 1869 only to be removed after a little over 4 months and moved to Marquette as it was quickly deemed unnecessary due to lack of reason for vessels to even enter the artificial canal to Lac La Belle. A new structure was built 26 years later due to increase of water traffic and the need for safe refuge accessibility that the harbor offers, particularly at night.
