Porphyry Island Lighthouse is located on the eastern side of the Black Bay Peninsula 24.8 miles (40km) east of Thunder Bay in Ontario’s Superior Country. Only accessible by boat, the closest launching point is at Silver Islet at the end of Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. There are also charter boat excursions that will take you there from the Thunder Bay Marina.
While there you can take an interpretive tour of the island, climb the 36 foot (10.9m) tall light tower, visit the museum and art gallery and explore the islands unique volcanic geology and flora and fauna. Meander down the unique Black Sand Beach. Take a seat on the Parks Canada Red Chairs and soak in the views of Lake Superior and the Sleeping Giant from a whole new perspective. There is also an opportunity to apply to be a volunteer light keeper and stay in the light keepers house and get a true sense of what it was like to be a lightkeeper on Porphyry Island.
