Cook County is made up of several unique and inviting communities, each with its own charm and adventure to offer visitors. Along the Lake Superior shoreline, the trio of Lutsen, Tofte, and Schroeder serves as the southern gateway to the region, where the dramatic Sawtooth Mountains meet the vast expanse of the lake and outdoor activities abound year-round. Farther north, Grand Marais is a vibrant harbor village celebrated for its arts scene, friendly small-town atmosphere, and scenic beauty that draws creatives and outdoor lovers alike. Heading inland, the Gunflint Trail unfolds as a 57-mile National Scenic Byway into the heart of the Superior National Forest and towards the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, offering wilderness access, serene lakes, and unforgettable trails. At the very tip of Highway 61 lies Grand Portage, a community rich in Ojibwe history and culture with traditional sites, outdoor experiences, and a welcoming spirit that reflects centuries of heritage. Together these communities create the diverse mosaic that makes Cook County “Naturally Unforgettable.”
