Noel’s Place is located in Sault Ste. Marie in Ontario’s Algoma Country. It is a multifaceted establishment that has become a local favorite since its inception in 2008. Founded by Robert Noel Syrette, it began as “R” Smokin’ Store, a modest 280-square-foot venue primarily offering tobacco products. Over the years, it has evolved into a comprehensive destination featuring a convenience store, a renowned restaurant named Chummy’s Grill, and a showcase of intricate wood carvings.
Chummy’s Grill, a highlight of Noel’s Place, is celebrated for its homestyle cooking and generous portions. The restaurant operates from 9 AM to 8 PM, seven days a week, and is particularly famous for its breakfast offerings and fresh fish fry. One of its signature dishes is the Indian Taco, which consists of a homemade scone topped with chili, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, salsa, and sour cream—a delightful representation of traditional Indigenous cuisine.
The ambiance of Chummy’s Grill is further enhanced by an array of life-like wood carvings, many crafted by the late Pete Ryan, a renowned carver who appeared on television shows such as “Carver Kings” and “Saw Dogs.” These artworks contribute to the unique atmosphere, making each dining experience both delicious and memorable. Adjacent to the restaurant, “R” Smokin’ Store offers a convenient drive-thru service where patrons can purchase a variety of tobacco products, convenience items, OLG tickets, and Indigenous-made giftware.
In addition to its culinary offerings, Noel’s Place is committed to holistic teaching among its staff. Employees participate in and learn about traditional food preparation alongside community members, including activities such as hunting, cleaning, butchering, and smoking. Overall, Noel’s Place stands as a testament to community engagement and cultural preservation, offering patrons a unique blend of Indigenous cuisine, art, and tradition in the heart of Sault Ste. Marie.
