The Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge, “Bong Bridge”, spans 11,800 feet (3,600m) with 8,300 feet (2,500m) crossing over the St. Louis River. It connects Superior, WI (Douglas County) and Duluth, MN. (St. Louis County) on highway US-2. It was built in 1982 and is a steel arch suspended deck bridge. The bridge was named after the WWII fighter pilot, Richard Ira Bong, who was originally from Poplar Wisconsin. The airport in Superior also memorializes this “Ace of Aces” namesake as well as the Veterans Historical Center. The view from this bridge when crossing 120 feet (36.5m) over the river is truly remarkable!
