Laurium is located in Michigan’s Houghton County surrounded by Calumet Township. Laurium sits along U.S. Highway 41 and is in the center of Keweenaw Peninsula. The community has a population of 1,977 and was founded in 1895. Like most other communities along this area of Michigan it is well known for its connection to copper and mining history. Many sites within Laurium are locations that are part of the Keweenaw National Historical Park. Some of the most popular things to do are visit the Gipper Memorial and Laurium Manor. The Gipper Memorial was placed to memorialize 20th century football legend George Gipp. Laurium is steeped with a rich history that is palpable to any one who visits.
