Manitou Island Lighthouse is located 3 miles (4.8 km) off the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula near Copper Harbor, on the eastern side of the island. The skeletal tower and light keeper dwelling were built in 1862 and the now automated lighthouse still remains active to aid navigation. The lighthouse is best viewed by boat and should only be reached by an very experienced boater to the area. The grounds are open for visitation though the lighthouse is closed to the public. There is a dock 2/3 of a mile (1.2kms) of rough terrain through the forest from the lighthouse grounds.
