Gunflint Trail is located in Minnesota’s Cook County and serves as a scenic gateway into some of the most breathtaking wilderness in the United States. Once a rugged footpath used by Indigenous peoples, trappers and early settlers, today the Gunflint Trail winds for about 57 miles from the harbor village of Grand Marais into the heart of the Superior National Forest and toward the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) near the Canadian border. Its designation as a National Scenic Byway reflects both its natural beauty and historical significance, with forested landscapes, pristine lakes and wildlife aplenty lining the route.
A visit to the Gunflint Trail means stepping into true North Woods adventure and relaxation. Outdoor enthusiasts can paddle world-class lakes like Saganaga, Seagull and Gunflint; hike forest paths or interpretive trails at places such as the Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center; tour by snowshoe, ski, or snowmobile in winter; and watch for moose, loons, owls and other wildlife that outnumber people here. Along the way, you’ll find lodges, resorts, outfitters, shops and dining options that have long welcomed travellers keen to explore life “Up North.” Whether you’re planning a canoe expedition into the BWCAW, a fall foliage road trip, a family getaway, or a peaceful nature retreat, the Gunflint Trail delivers unforgettable moments in every season.
